Description
The master degree program in public health nutrition is designed for individuals seeking formal academic professional training in nutrition applied to public health. The program equips students with the fundamental knowledge and skills of public health, food and nutrition and its promotion necessary for a career in settings ranging from national and international non-governmental organizations, voluntary, community-based agencies to government health institutions and for-profit agencies. The program familiarize students with fundamental knowledge and skills of public health nutrition and its concepts, nutrition policy, basic sciences and nutrition epidemiology, its theory and application. The course aims to produce professionals with degree of master of public health nutrition (MPHN) in order to achieve nutritional well-being of all people to maintain a healthy life to contribute in the socio-economic development of the country, through evidence based nutrition program implementation in collaboration with relevant sectors.
Objectives
General Objective
At the end of the master degree course of public health nutrition, the graduate will be able to apply the knowledge and skills necessary to plan, implement, monitor and evaluate appropriate and evidence-based nutrition program at local and national level. The course also helps to develop knowledge and skills on cross-cutting issues that exist across professional public health and nutrition practice.
Specific Objectives
The graduates will able to:
1. Explain the public health concept, components, methods and approach and its systems
2. Apply theory and application of healthy food habits and behavior in various setting
3. Develop need and evidence based nutrition programs and projects in various settings for individual and community with critical analysis of the existing policy of public health service and programs.
4. Plan effective public health nutrition promotion and education programs to facilitate behavior change for making healthy food habits and behavior for risk reduction
5. Execute public health nutrition programs in various settings to strengthen the healthcare delivery applying the knowledge and skill of nutrition sensitive public health program
6. Plan and organize nutrition training and education program in health system to strengthen the health service delivery
7. Monitor and evaluate the public health nutrition programs in various settings by applying various models and approaches in the framework of food and nutrition policy
8. Apply appropriate research principles and methods in public health nutrition by conducting research on various aspects to explore new knowledge and suggest appropriate strategies to develop and strengthen nutrition policy and program
Curricular structure
There is a total of 1200 marks in the course. These marks are distributed over two years of the program – 800 in first year and 400 in second year. There are 12 papers with 100 marks each including thesis. The outline of the course is given in the following tables.
Eligibility
Those who are interested in admission to the master of Public Health Nutrition (MPHN) program should have fulfilled at least the following requirements.
Admission Process
Candidates should pass the entrance examination of Commision of Medical Education.
