Description
The master degree program in health promotion and education is designed for individuals seeking formal academic professional training in health promotion and education. The program equips students with the fundamental knowledge and skills of public health, health promotion and education and communication necessary for a career in settings ranging from national and international non-governmental organizations, voluntary, community-based agencies to government health institutions and for-profit agencies. The program familiarizes students with fundamental knowledge and skills of public health, health promotion and education and its concepts, basic sciences and behavioral sciences, its theory and application. The course aims to produce professionals with degree of master of health promotion and education (MHPE) in order to build healthy public policy, create supportive environments, strengthen community action, develop personal skills and reorienting health services as determined by Ottawa charter of health promotion and education.
Objectives
General Objective
The master degree course of health promotion and education will enable students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to plan, implement, monitor and evaluate appropriate and evidence-based health promotion and education programs down to the village level.
Specific Objectives
The graduates will be able to:
1. Understand the public health concept, components and its systems
2. Apply theory and application of health promotion and education and behavior in various settings
3. Develop need and evidence based programs and projects in health promotion and education applicable in various settings for individual and community with critical analysis of the existing policy of health service and programs.
4. Plan effective health promotion and education programs to facilitate behavior change for better health and making healthy and easy choices
5. Execute health promotion and education projects and program in various settings to strengthen the health care delivery applying the knowledge and skill of health promotion, education and communication approaches.
6. Plan and organize training and education program in health system to strengthen the health service delivery in public
7. Monitor and evaluate the health promotion and education and communication projects and programs in various settings by applying various models and approaches in the framework of public policy.
8. Act as resource person in conducting health promotion and education program in various setting
9. Communicate health and health promotion and education needs, concerns and resources
10. Apply appropriate research principles & methods in health promotion & education by conducting research on various aspects of health promotion and education to explore new knowledge and suggest appropriate strategies to develop and strengthen health promotion and education.
Curricular structure
There are a total of 13 papers including thesis and 1200 marks in the course. There are 8 papers with 100 marks each in the first year. There are two specialized papers, a practicum paper and thesis in the second year. The detail outline of the course is given in the following tables.
Eligibility
Those who are interested in admission to the Master of Health Promotion and Education (MHPE) programme should have fulfilled at least the following requirements:
a) Bachelor in Health Sciences (Health Promotion and Education, Health Communication, Public Health, Epidemiology, Nutrition and health, Environmental Health, Occupation Health, Nursing, medicine and surgery, Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Dentistry, Post graduate diploma in health promotion and education (PGDHE/DHE) as recognized by TU
b) Applicant with above degree must be registered in relevant professional councils
c) One year of working experience after completion of above degree
d) Must pass the entrance examination of Commission of Medical Education.
